The Kennesaw State University Student Managed Investment Fund was started in May of 2006. The organization is run by KSU Business majors and overseen by faculty adviser Stefano Mazzotta. The objective of the SMIF is to provide students of the Coles College of business with hands on experience in the world of portfolio management and investing. The result of this will be the advancement of the Coles College of Business as one of the leading business schools in Georgia. The organization has already experienced significant process. This is exemplified by the fact that the Kennesaw State University Student Managed Investment fund has gone from a mere idea, to a potential full-fledged LLC with financial backing and accommodations.

This fund is designed to be run like a business rather than a class. The purpose of this is to provide students with the most realistic setting possible. It is because of this that the fund will operate within the confines of a limited liability corporation which is wholly owned by the KSU Foundation, a non-profit organization. Although this eliminates the real world experience of tax preparation it also allows students to focus more on the investing side of the process.
